THE MYTH

The olive tree is a sacred tree from ancient times and is under the protection of the goddess Athena.

According to the Greek mythology the creation of the olive tree was the result of a contest between the gods as to who would become the protector of Athens, the newly built city in Attica. The contest took place on the sacred rock of Acropolis and the winner became to be Athena, who offered the Athenians the first olive tree in the world, which sprouted in the soil she struck her spear.

This olive tree was used for feeding, lighting heating, health and beauty in Ancient Athens. The next olive trees around became a strong symbol of the city and were considered sacred. Anyone caught cutting or uprooting an olive tree was liable to ostracism or death.
