{"id":1247,"date":"2020-01-09T09:12:12","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T09:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elfaoils.gr\/?page_id=1247"},"modified":"2020-05-17T10:42:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-17T10:42:03","slug":"the-nutritional-claims-of-extra-virgin-olive-oils","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/elfaoils.gr\/?page_id=1247&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"THE NUTRITIONAL CLAIMS OF EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OILS"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h3>THE NUTRITIONAL VALUES OF EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL<\/h3>\r\n<p>For olive oils whose chemical composition is verified, three nutritional and health claims among those recognised by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) can be made and are legally allowed.<br \/><br \/><strong>RICH IN MONOUNSATURATED FATS<\/strong><br \/>Substituting saturated with unsaturated fats in the diet contributes to maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels.<br \/><br \/>The daily fat intake for an adult is 70 g, and choosing a fat rich in monounsaturated (such as olive oil) or polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as the majority of vegetable oils) over fats rich in saturated fatty acids (animal fats) contributes to maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels.<br \/><br \/>Furthermore, olive oil\u2019s higher content of monounsaturated fatty acids compared to polyunsaturated ones makes it more stable during cooking.<br \/><br \/><strong>HIGH VITAMIN E CONTENT<\/strong><br \/>Vitamin E contributes to protecting cells from oxidative stress<br \/><br \/>If a foodstuff contains a minimum amount of 1.8 mg of vitamin E per 100 g, it can be considered a \u201csource of vitamin E\u201d, whereas if it contains at least twice that amount (3.6 mg) it should be considered a food \u201chigh in vitamin E\u201d.<br \/><br \/>Of course, a good extra virgin olive oil can contain more than 20 mg% of vitamin E, or more than 166% of our daily requirements of vitamin E<br \/><br \/><strong>OLIVE OIL POLYPHENOLS<\/strong><br \/>Olive oil polyphenols contribute to protecting blood lipids from oxidative stress<br \/><br \/>The bitter, spicy flavour of good extra-virgin olive oils comes from the presence of special antioxidants called \u201colive oil polyphenols\u201d.<br \/><br \/>These substances contribute to protecting blood lipids from oxidative stress; a daily intake of 20 grams of extra-virgin olive oil, which contains 25 mg% of polyphenols, has a beneficial effect.<\/p>\r\n<h3><br \/>WELLNESS IN EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL<\/h3>\r\n<p><br \/>Olive oil is unique among vegetable oils in that it is produced from simply pressing the olives, without the use of solvents or an industrial refining process.<br \/><br \/>The extraction process preserves all the fruit\u2019s natural substances in the extra-virgin oil, giving it a unique smell and taste typical of the production areas and of the varieties used.<br \/><br \/>But in addition to its pleasant characteristics, olive oil \u2013 and extra-virgin oil in particular \u2013 is important also for its nutritional characteristics.<br \/><br \/>Below is an explanation of the nutrition information panel on our extra-virgin oils:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>NUTRITION INFORMATION\u00a0EU Regulation 1169\/2011<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Average values for 100 ml<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>energy<\/td>\r\n<td>3404 Kj \/ 828 Kcal<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Fats<\/td>\r\n<td>92 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>of which: Saturated fatty acids<\/td>\r\n<td>14 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>di cui: Monounsaturated fatty acids<\/td>\r\n<td>69 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>di cui: Polyunsaturated fatty acids<\/td>\r\n<td>9 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Carbohydrates<\/td>\r\n<td>0 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>of which Sugars<\/td>\r\n<td>0 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Dietary fibre<\/td>\r\n<td>0 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Protein<\/td>\r\n<td>0 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Salt<\/td>\r\n<td>0 g<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) *<\/td>\r\n<td>17 mg<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>(*) 142% of recommended dietary intake<\/td>\r\n<td>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Energy<\/span><br \/>100 ml of olive oil weigh 92 grams, which (as all pure oils and fats) are made up of 100% fat.<br \/>Since a gram of fat produces 9 kcal or 37 kJ, the total energy is obtained by multiplying 92 grams by 9 or by 37.<br \/><br \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Type of fats<\/span><br \/>Of the 92 grams contained in 100 ml of oil, only 14 g are saturated fatty acids, while the rest is made up of unsaturated and largely monounsaturated (75%) fats.<br \/>As with all pure fats, olive oil doesn\u2019t contain carbohydrates, sugars, dietary fibre, protein or salt.<br \/><br \/>We guarantee at least 17mg of vitamin E in our extra-virgin oils, which is above the recommended daily intake by 142%.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h3>THE ROLE OF OLIVE OIL IN THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET<\/h3>\r\n<p><br \/>Thanks to studies conducted on the so-called Mediterranean diet, since 1970 people have believed that a healthy diet contributes to a higher life expectancy.
